"Third Place"

The concept of "Third Place" (also known as third space) is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace.  This project for Jefferson Davis Community College was designed around the "Third Place" idea of creating a social gathering place for students and the community alike to enjoy apart from the home or workplace.  This project included soft seating areas and computer quads along with various other meeting spaces within the newly renovated library which make it a hub for social gathering.

The project includes expanding the 11,000 s.f. library by infilling 3 of the 4 exterior porches, removing interior partitions to create an open atmosphere, designing a new layout for stacks, complete renovation of interior finishes, and electrical and mechanical upgrades.  Our team’s innovative design approach has enabled the College to accomplish more of its goals with this project than originally thought possible.
